Define the job before the brand
Laptops are the hardest category to shop because every spec trades against weight, battery, and price. List your non-negotiables: screen size, battery life, gaming capability, or Linux compatibility. Everything else is negotiable once the job is clear.
Ultrabooks prioritize portability and silence. Gaming laptops prioritize GPU power and cooling at the cost of weight. Workstation-class machines add RAM and core count for compilation and media work — often overkill for general use.
CPU tiers without the jargon trap
Modern laptop CPUs span efficient "U" series chips and high-power "H" or "HX" parts. For light office and browsing, efficient chips deliver better battery life. For sustained loads — compiling, video export, gaming — prefer higher TDP parts with adequate cooling.
Generation matters more than small clock differences within the same year. A current-generation mid chip often beats last year's flagship in efficiency and features.

RAM and storage
Sixteen gigabytes is the practical minimum for new purchases in 2026. Thirty-two gigabytes future-proofs development and heavy browser use. Check whether RAM is soldered — many thin laptops cannot be upgraded later.
One terabyte NVMe is comfortable for games and media. Five hundred twelve gigabytes can work with cloud storage discipline. Prefer PCIe Gen4 or better drives on new machines; they affect large project load times more than everyday browsing.
Display: the spec people regret ignoring
A dim or low-color panel ruins an otherwise strong laptop. Look for sRGB coverage for general use; creators should target higher DCI-P3 coverage. Matte vs glossy is personal — glossy pops in dark rooms but fights glare near windows.
Resolution: 1440p on fourteen-inch screens is sharp; 1080p on fifteen-inch is still common and easier on battery. Touchscreens add weight and cost — skip unless you use pen input.
Battery life claims vs reality
Manufacturer battery numbers assume dim screens and light loads. Expect roughly sixty to seventy percent of marketed figures for mixed real use. Reviews that loop video playback are a baseline, not your compile-and-Slack day.
Charging via USB-C is convenient for travel if wattage is high enough for your model. Some gaming laptops still need barrel chargers for full speed.
Refurbished, open-box, and warranty
Manufacturer refurb programs often beat third-party resellers on warranty clarity. Retail open-box can be pristine returns — verify return windows. Consumer laptops typically carry one-year warranties; business lines sometimes offer three-year options worth the premium for travel-heavy users.
Spotting real laptop deals
Laptop "deals" frequently move old inventory. Compare the exact model number (CPU, RAM, screen) against current-generation alternatives. A steep discount on a three-year-old chip may lose to a modest discount on a current one after battery and performance are accounted for.
